Rain & Solar, How it works

It’s springtime! This season the midwest will have longer days, warmer weather,.... and rain. We get the question quite often during our Free Energy Consultation: “Do solar panels work on a rainy day?”

The answer is, “Yes!” Solar panels will still work even when the light is reflected or partially blocked by clouds. Now, we all know that the more sunlight, the better.  That much is obvious. But, on average, clouds block only about 20% of the sun’s light, that’s why you can still see outside when it's cloudy & rainy.

Did you know that rain can be good for solar? Rain actually helps to keep your panels operating efficiently by washing away any dust, dirt, or pollen.

On top of that, infrared light gets through clouds even easier. That type of light can be used by your solar panels to make electricity. Most solar panels convert nearly half of the infrared light that hits them into electricity. On a clear day, infrared light makes up more than 50% of the light that shines down.

So, full-sun is always best but, yes, your panels will work in the rain.

If you are like most people, you have at the very least gave going solar a thought. Now is the time to take your thoughts a bit further.  Don’t let summer send your electricity bills through the roof. Go solar now & start saving now!

At a time that fits your schedule, one of our Energy Consultants will meet with you to discuss your energy use, determine your solar needs, & answer any questions...even on a rainy day.
